Ok, somthings wrong with the timing on my chevette. Here's what i have ( 1.6 Rebuilt block with a rebuilt 1.4 head ) I have set the timing a hundred times and nothing... Im ready to burn it down!!!!!!!!!! Im using the 1.6 pulleys. Could it be the 1.4 distributor? The junk will run but you cant rev it as it will back fire. After that i turn the cam 1 revolution and try again and nothing! Any help will keep her from death! I do not have money for a degree wheel. Thanks Shawn

Shawn,
Start back at square one. Align the crank pulley (zero) and the cam pulley with the hole in the cover. Rotate it over after doing this to make sure they line up again. Leave it lined up, and pull the distributor cap. Check the location of your rotor. It should be pointing at #1 spark plug wire. Im betting its off a tooth or 2. If its off, pull the distributor (fuel pump first to pull rod out) and move the oil pump shaft with a straight screw driver. You may have to play with it some to get it to line up, they'll want to slip back to the position you had it before if you dont turn the oil pump shaft enough. Once you get everything right, you can set the timing with a light to fine tune it.
Is this a racing engine or a street engine? Head been milled? Racing Cam?
If the above is right, you have other problems. Let us know what you find out!

It wouldnt start 180 out. He said it would run but backfires, thats why i think its a tooth or two off at the distributor. Once you get it running, start out around 10 degrees timing, you may have to adjust from there. Love those 76 models!
