I am running a motor that puts out 150hp and 160tq, will the stock axle handle it or will I have to fit a different axle under it? I have a 1980.
I looked and couldn't find any info that helped.
thanks -John-

should be fine with that, you can use a s10 rear end though. i think they are limited slip. i have 1 out of an s10 blazer and it looks about an inch longer on each side or so, i just set it behind the car. all you need to do is take off all the mounting brackets off the chevette rear axle and measure and weld them to the s10 rear axle. i was going to do a 4.3 swap in mine but went a diff. way. oh also the drive shaft will have to be extended or something, pretty easy though. if anyone wants the s10 axle and driveshaft i could sell for 50 plus shipping or pick up i live in new york about 40 miles from P.A. or so

I have used a Dana 44 (8.5 ring gear)out of a 1971-1976 postal jeep (DJ5) little narrower than the chevette. Also all Postal jeeps of the years listed have centered pinions, 3.73 gears and limited slip diff's. This rear end is also under "narrow Track"jeeps of the 70's. but those could have other gear ratios and open Diff's. I am running a 2002 LS1 and didn't want the weight of a 9" mine is a street car.

i've ran more torque and hp. than that with the stock type rear-ends with no problem. just make sure the clearances are right and keep plenty of gear lube in it. i assume we are talking on dirt not blacktop
