Hi
I am builing my first chevette engine, and after reading the previous posts I have some questions.
First off I have much experience building Corvair engines for racing and know all their weak points and how to make them live. Now I need help in learning what I need to look out for and / or modify in making a Chevette motor "bullet proof"
What I have is a NEW GM shory block, fresh out out the box, never intsalled. It is a late block. I am going to use this in a port fuel injected (already completed) turbocharged intercooled engine set up. Fuel injection is Megasquirt with a home built intake. The Megasquirt works real well.
I am planning on 15 psi boost, pump gas, 8.3-8.5 CR and keeping "stock" red line at 6000. My plan is some street bt time trialing on road courses and autocrossing (Solo).
I am using a reground cam from Delta camshaft in Tacoma Washington, their "260" grind. basically it is more lift with same lobe seperation, not much overlap for the turbo application.
My questions are,
1) will I need forged pistind or are stock Chevy pistons good enough?
2) what head gaskets work the best with Chevette heads.
3) I am installing a new oil pump, any trick to improve pressure or is lubricatio not an issue with the Chevette motor.
4) What needs to be done to make this engine live, I've seen references to the bottom end but it appeared to be standard advice. Is there anything specifically needed or is it good enough.
5) any other relavent advice from those who know
Thanks
Ray
