What weight do you have to have. My track says 1lb per CC. That will help, but overall, it will be hard.
I was going to run a stock chevette motor, and found good parts, but my engine builder told me that it would be a "wast of time". So I droped the 1.6, and went with a pontiac 2.5. My track will let me run a chevy motor in a chevy car.
Good luck.

1 lb per cc rule... use it to your advantage. How much HP will the Pontiac 2.5L engine make versus the 1.6L Chevette? You can build a 225 - 250 HP Chevette engine, put it in a 1600 - 1700 pound car and "walk the dog". Keep in mind with the 2.5L you're going to weigh nearly 1,000 lbs more than if you had a 1.6L. Will that 2.5L produce 100 more HP than a Chevette?
I've seen guys take 2.0L Ford engines and blow away the 2.5L's because they were producing nearly the same amount of HP and weighed 500 lbs less.
I would reconsider the 2.5L idea unless it was a major HP gain.
Good luck, Stephen Fields

i would look into a 151 [the iron duke ] motor, if you happen to run upon an marine version you have steel crank great rods ,big bore and a strong motor, mercury outboards called this motor the 140 hp

I think the Iron Duke was a 4 cylinder engine used in the early Pontiac Tempests(maybe others) & was based on the 389 cubic inch V-8 cut in half length wise.

The 151 (iron duke) uses the same pistons as a 350, same lifters, and rockers. I had a problem with the marine version in that it is a front sump. The one i got out of a old sunfire was a rear sump. Now I don't know if I could have changes the oil pump because the marine block was busted.
I have not dyno'ed my motor, but my engine builder builds most of the V8's at the track. When I picked up my motor, he said "It should be a thumper".
If you want to build a 1.6, and have the parts to build a good one, do it. But if you can find a 2.5, might not be a bad idea to hold onto it, there cheap to build. I got mine built for less than $1,000. That included all the machine work, parts and labor.

hey guys sorry its been so long... my track rule is 2300 lbs across the board..
i was thinking of droping a 2.5 duke in it instead i was doing some digging on em has anyone here tryed to drop a v8 head on one i see that the spacing of the cylenders are the same..
this is what guys in the arca truck classes are doing with an aftermarket block but the stock 2.5 heads also work with the block so i was wondering if the v8 head would work on a stock block.
i also found out that the rod journal size is a small v8 size so long rods are easyly found and same with the pistons seeing how there the same as a 350..

Hi, just to let you know weve been running chevettes againts the mustangs, turbocharged engines if equiped stock from factory and fuelinjected engines and 2.5 ltr. chevys. My older son now 18 won 2005,2006,and2007 class championship and my younger son finished 3rd in points his first year in 2007 and won the 2008 class championship this year with a healthy 22 car count for the ministock class. the 2.3 mustangs have really stepped up this year so we did a little more to our 1.6 and could still pull away from the mustang on the straight away. Our car runs a steady 7200-7300 rpm range with no problem. You have to make sure you build a good solid bottom end to really on. We are also are still using the stock HP exhaust manifol. and stock intake with a 2jet rochester that i modified myself that really made the chevette start pully hard all the way around the track. I think it would be a mistake trying a 2.5 or and iron duke. We started to but the weight added to front was not right for the car. My older sons car weighed 2250 but my younger boys car only weighs 1800 and could still take more weight off if needed.
